  • A large flock of snow geese (Chen caerulescens) takes off at sunrise from a pond at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. During the winter months, thousands of snow geese spend the night on the pond and take off at or just before sunrise. This dramatic show is best viewed from part of the reserve known as the Flight Deck.

  • Rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus var. consimilis) grows under a fiery sunrise at the edge of Mono Lake in Mono County, California. Mono Lake has no outlet, so salt accumulates and makes the water alkeline. Limestone columns called tufa towers are visible in the lake. Tufa towers form under water. They were exposed when Los Angeles diverted some of the fresh water that feeds the lake, causing the lake level to drop.

The calcium bonds to carbonates in the water, forming calcium carbonate, a type of limestone. The calcium carbonate builds on itself, gradually forming towering columns. Those columns grow only when under water; they stop growing when the lake level drops and they are exposed.

  • Lassen Peak, a 10,462 foot (3,189 meter) volcano in northern California, is reflected in the calm waters of Summit Lake at sunrise. Lassen Peak is the southernmost volcano in the Cascade Range and last erupted from 1914-1917.

  • The rising sun begins to illuminate the east face of Steens Mountain in southeast Oregon. Steens Mountain is a roughly 30-mile (48-kilometer) long block mountain that rises a mile above the Alvord Desert. Massive internal pressure forced the ridge upward; glaciers carved dramatic gorges on the western face. Steens Mountain is the largest block-fault mountain in the Great Basin of Oregon and Nevada.

  • The Icelandic geyser Strokkur erupts as the sun rises in an area known as the Golden Circle in Iceland. Strokkur, which means "churn" in Icelandic, erupts every four to eight minutes, sending a column of hot water as much as 40 meters (130 feet) into the air. Strokkur is located in the Haukadalur geothermal area, not far from Geysir, which no longer erupts regularly.

Mount Muhabura is also known as Mount Muhavura and is an inactive volcano, last erupting within the past 11,000 years. With a summit at 4,127 meters (13,540 feet), it's the third-highest peak in the Virunga Mountains. The mountain is spread across Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda, and is home to populations of mountain gorillas.
