Yellow-eyed penguins are endangered and are one of the most rare penguins in the world with a total population of only about 4,000. About 90 percent of the yellow-eyed penguin's diet consists of fish. During the breeding season, many of the penguins spend the entire day hunting in the ocean. They enter the Pacific Ocean at dawn and return at dusk, venturing as far as 25 kilometers (16 miles) offshore and diving to depts of up to 120 meters (394 feet).
