When calcium-rich springs flow up through the lake bottom, the calcium bonds to the carbonates in the lake water, forming calcium carbonate, a type of limestone. The solid material builds on itself, gradually forming a tufa tower. The tufa towers form only underwater; they were exposed when the lake was drained to provide drinking water for cities. After environmental groups took legal action, less water is being diverted for cities and the lake is slowly refilling.

Mount Muhabura is also known as Mount Muhavura and is an inactive volcano, last erupting within the past 11,000 years.   • A hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) opens its mouth wide as it yawns with the golden light of sunset reflecting on the Olare Orok River in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. In hippopotamuses, yawning is a sign of aggression, allowing them to show off their long, sharp teeth. The hippopotamus can also open its jaws up to 180°, which is the widest opening of any land animal.
