  • The Icelandic geyser Strokkur erupts as the sun rises in an area known as the Golden Circle in Iceland. Strokkur, which means "churn" in Icelandic, erupts every four to eight minutes, sending a column of hot water as much as 40 meters (130 feet) into the air. Strokkur is located in the Haukadalur geothermal area, not far from Geysir, which no longer erupts regularly.

  • Brandywine Falls drops 65 feet (20 meters) into a lush gorge in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio. Brandywine Falls drops overs over three different types of rock: Berea sandstone at the top, Bedford shale in the middle and Cleveland shale at the bottom. The newest rock is about 320 million years old; the oldest is about 400 million. The layers were exposed and the waterfall was formed about 10,000 years ago when the last glaciers retreated from the area. The top Berea sandstone layer is the hardest and protects the softer layers below from the erosive force of the falling water.

The young eagles were about two and a half months old at the time this image was taken and both had been flying for a couple weeks. One of the parents would deliver food to the nest while the young eagles were away and they would race back to the nest to feed. The dominant eagle arrived first and prevented the other juvenile from feeding.

  • The Little Blitzen Gorge is one of four massive gorges located on the west face of Steens Mountain in southeastern Oregon. Steens Mountain is a roughly 30-mile (48-kilometer) long block mountain that rises a mile above the Alvord Desert. Massive internal pressure forced the ridge upward; glaciers carved dramatic gorges on the western face. Steens Mountain is the largest block-fault mountain in the Great Basin of Oregon and Nevada.

Steens Mountain is a roughly 30-mile (48-kilometer) long block mountain that rises a mile above the Alvord Desert.   • Pacific Ocean waves flow into the remnants of a blowhole at Cape Perpetua on the Oregon coast. Blowholes are essentially skylights in ocean caves. At high tide, water fills the cave and the pressure of the incoming waves forces water through the hole, high into the air. Over time, erosion has enlarged this hole so that water no longer jets out of it.

  • The nearly full moon is visible between layers of storm clouds over Mount Baker, an active volcano in the North Cascades of Washington state. Mount Baker, 10,781 feet (3,286 meters) tall, last erupted in 1880. In this image, its summit is obscured by a cap cloud, a type of cloud that forms when moist air is forced up and over a mountaintop. This scene was captured from an area of the North Cascades known as Artist Point.

  • The sunset colors the clouds above Bláfjall, a 1222 meter (4009 foot) table volcano in northern Iceland. Bláfjall formed as a result of an eruption under a thick sheet of ice during the last ice age. Lava forced and melted its way up through the ice and formed a strong shield of lava on the mountain's summit. That strong layer resists erosion, giving the mountain its rectangular shape.

  • An ochre sea star (Pisaster ochraceus) feeds on a mussel exposed at low tide at Bandon, Oregon. Sea stars, also called starfish, feed by forcing shells open, inserting their stomachs into the shells and then slowly digesting and sucking the food out.

  • A large lenticular cloud forms near Mount Rainier in Washington state. Lenticular clouds form near mountains. Moist air is forced up and over the mountain and it cools and condenses into a cloud as it rises. Strong winds shape the cloud, which can form several miles away from the mountain that disturbed the path of the air.

  • A lenticular cloud caps the summit of Mount Rainier at sunrise in this view from Bonney Lake, Washington. Lenticular clouds form when moist air is forced up and over mountains or other large obstructions. Higher, cirrostratus turn red in the first light of day. Mount Rainier, the highest peak in Washington state and the tallest volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range, has a summit elevation of 14,411 feet (4,392 meters).

  • Two snowy owls (Bubo scandiacus, formerly Nyctea scandiaca) rest together on a log near Boundary Bay, British Columbia, Canada. Snowy owls, like other owls, typically hunt at night and rest during the day. Snowy owls are rarely found as far south as the Canada/United States border, but do migrate that far once or twice a decade in a type of migration known as an irruption. Irruptions occur when the snowy owl population is too large for the food supply on the Arctic tundra, forcing them to spread out much farther than normal.

  • A bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) issues a warning to a common raven (Corvus corax) that approached too close in Heritage Park in Kirkland, Washington. The raven and two others repeatedly plunged at the eagle, eventually forcing it to fly from its perch.

  • A cap cloud covers the summit of Mount Baker, a 10,778 feet (3,285 m) volcano in Washington state. Cap clouds, technically called orographic stratiform clouds, form when moist air is forced over a mountaintop. The moisture condenses into water droplets as it climbs in elevation.
