  • A close-up shows the detail of the texture of the Giant Dome Column, located in the Hall of Giants in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. Giant Dome, like the other speleothems in the Hall of Giants, began as small calcite deposits on the cavern floor. Dripping water resulted in more calcite building up on the initial deposits, gradually building the small formations into large stalagmites. Giant Dome eventually grew to touch the ceiling, turning it from a stalgmite into a column that is 62 feet (19 meters) tall.

Columns, a type of speleothem, are formed when groundwater containing calcium bicarbonate solution seeps into the cave. Then that solution is exposed to the air in the cave, carbon dioxide gas is released and calcite is deposited.

  • The Icelandic geyser Strokkur erupts as the sun rises in an area known as the Golden Circle in Iceland. Strokkur, which means "churn" in Icelandic, erupts every four to eight minutes, sending a column of hot water as much as 40 meters (130 feet) into the air. Strokkur is located in the Haukadalur geothermal area, not far from Geysir, which no longer erupts regularly.

  • Large limestone formations, known as tufa, rise from Mono Lake in eastern California. The tufa result from calcium-rich springs that flow up from the bottom of the lake. The calcium bonds to carbonates in the water, forming calcium carbonate, a type of limestone. The calcium carbonate builds on itself, gradually forming towering columns. Those columns grow only when under water; they stop growing when the lake level drops and they are exposed.

  • Vibrant God beams, called crepuscular rays, form over Cathedral Rock, a towering mountain near Sedona, Arizona. The beams form when the sun shines into fog or mist. The columns at the summit of Cathedral Rock cast three-dimensional shadows between the rays.

  • Several tufa columns are turned golden by the rising sun at Mono Lake, California. Tufa forms only underwater. When calcium-rich springs flow up through the lake bottom, the calcium bonds to the carbonates in the lake water, forming calcium carbonate, a type of limestone. The solid material builds on itself, gradually forming a tufa tower. The tufa towers form only underwater; they were exposed when the lake was drained to provide drinking water for cities. After environmental groups took legal action, less water is being diverted for cities and the lake is slowly refilling.

The geyser's eruptions are not as predictable as the name Old Faithful might suggest. Eruptions can occur as little as 45 minutes apart or with a gap as long as 125 minutes. The geyser's height also varies; at times the column of water can reach 184 feet (56 meters) high.

  • Rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus var. consimilis) grows under a fiery sunrise at the edge of Mono Lake in Mono County, California. Mono Lake has no outlet, so salt accumulates and makes the water alkeline. Limestone columns called tufa towers are visible in the lake. Tufa towers form under water. They were exposed when Los Angeles diverted some of the fresh water that feeds the lake, causing the lake level to drop.

  • The midday sun shines behind the cross atop Hallgrímskirkja, a Lutheran church and prominent landmark in Reykjavík, Iceland. Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson designed the church to resemble the basalt columns found around Iceland. Construction of Hallgrímskirkja took 38 years, reaching completion in 1986. Also visible in this image is a Leif Eriksson Memorial, which the United States gave to Iceland in 1930 to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Iceland's parliament at Þingvellir.
